The establishment of a parliamentary committee to expose the circles of influence in the judiciary will contribute to public scrutiny of the activities of the Prosecution Office - the only institution that has the power to conduct the necessary investigation with all procedural means under the Criminal Procedure Code and to hold the guilty accountable, the Bulgarian Judges Association said in a statement on their website on Thursday evening.

According to the association, time and again the reactions of the institutions after the murder of Martin Bozhanov are "post-mortem" - an extrajudicial declaration of a person as a criminal, when during his lifetime reports of his illegal violations of the independence of the court were left without consequences".

They also insist that the Supreme Judicial Council, which is called upon to protect the independence of the judiciary, should set up a commission, as it has done in some of the most substantial scandals related to previous brutal forms of undermining the authority of the judiciary in Bulgaria, to follow the course of the investigation into the threats against judges, and to clarify the reasons for requiring the audacity of prosecutors to initiate such pre-trial proceedings.
