The Sofia District Prosecutor's Office dropped the citizenship case against Continue the Change co-leader Kiril Petkov, the institution said on Thursday.

An investigation was launched against Petkov after a tip-off related to a declaration he filed before becoming a caretaker minister.

The case was initially the subject of work by the special prosecutor's office before it was closed. The documents were then sent to the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office again. This happened about two years ago. An alert to the state prosecution service said that Kiril Petkov had submitted a declaration containing false information describing the situation with his dual citizenship.

The prosecutor's office then said that by law it could not open an investigation. That ruling was upheld in two instances. On May 31, the Supreme Prosecutor's Office of Cassation sent the case to Sofia District again. This was the reason why Petkov's immunity as an MP was requested. He waived it himself.

After the pre-trial proceedings were initiated, numerous investigative actions were carried out. Following a report of the collected materials, the supervising prosecutors have assessed that no punishable act has been committed and the pre-trial proceedings have been terminated, the prosecutor's office added in a press release.
