Police have found and seized EUR 185,000 and BGN 25,000 in the home of a senior official from Nessebar Municipality, which were allegedly to be used for vote buying in the upcoming October 29 local elections. The high-ranking official was arrested in Burgas on Wednesday as part of a police operation conducted under the prosecuting magistracy's supervision, Prosecutor Maria Markova and the Burgas Police Chief, Commissioner Emil Pavlov, told the media here on Thursday.
The municipal employee was arrested after the authorities were tipped off. The police conducted searches and seizures.
"The report was about a person who [allegedly] received a huge sum of money for vote buying in Nessebar Municipality. The police have found and seized EUR 185,000 and BGN 25,000 in cash. It's important to note that the operation unprecedented, because together with the prosecution service, we managed to get to the highest level, i.e. the people who provide the funds and distribute them among the so-called organizers and vote buyers," Commissioner Pavlov said.
The investigation is in its beginning stages and work on the case continues.
