The resignation of the administrative head of the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office has been requested due to major shortcomings in the organization of work, which led to heavy consequences, the press centre of the Bulgarian Prosecution Office said on Sunday.

Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov says in a statement that he expects the resignation of the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office Administrative Head, Nevena Zartova. "Otherwise, I will make use of my legal powers and refer the case to the Prosecutorial Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council," he notes.

As a reason for the resignation demand Sarafov refers to the investigation of a case of double murder near Sofia, reported by the Sofia City Prosecution Office on August 5.

“I have perceived with great indignation the circumstances reported to me by the Sofia City Prosecution Office in the pre-trial proceedings for the double murder near the village of Lozen, in the course of which it has been established that the same person is the perpetrator of another premeditated murder, which took place last year [2022], the pre-trial proceedings for which are conducted under Article 122 of the Penal Code /for causing death by negligence/ in the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office," Sarafov further says.

He stressed that as a matter of urgency, the administrative heads of prosecution offices across the country should conduct reviews of all pending pre-trial proceedings related to causing death, carefully refining charges where necessary and where there is an identified perpetrator.
