MEP Elena Yoncheva, who is a member of the LIBE Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG), said on Wednesday that the DRFMG is requesting information on the development of the Barcelonagate investigation since 2020. Yoncheva, who represents the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, is the only Bulgarian members of the DRFMG.

Bulgaria has been under the group's scrutiny since the summer of 2020, on Yoncheva's initiative. Barcelonagate has been in the focus of MEPs' attention since September 2020, when questions were sent to Bulgarian authorities about this case, as well as about the photos of wads of money and gold bars in then Prime Minister Boyko Borissov's nightstand.

Yoncheva is expected to brief MEPs on the latest developments related to the rule of law in Bulgaria, at a meeting of the monitoring group on Thursday.

The monitoring group will have a second mission in Bulgaria in autumn this year. The first mission was in September 2021, when the MEPs also met Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev, to whom they again raised the issue of Barcelonagate and the photos of gold bars. Some of the documents and letters sent to and from the Bulgarian authorities have been published on the monitoring group's website.
