Bulgaria will save BGN 188 million on COVID-19 vaccines under a contract with the Pfizer pharmaceutical corporation thanks to the consistent efforts and the firm stance of the Health Ministry and the caretaker cabinet, the ministry said on Friday.

The European Commission has successfully completed its negotiations with Pfizer and signed a fifth supplementary agreement to the Purchase Agreement for the further development, production, purchasing options and supply of COVID-19 vaccines for EU Member States between the European Commission and Pfizer Inc./BioNTech Manufacturing GmbH (SANTE/2021/03/020).

As a result, Bulgaria will receive only the delayed, paid amounts of vaccines which were to be supplied in 2022. Afterwards, the country will not receive any more supplies until the contract with Pfizer expires in 2026, unless it expressly states a desire to the contrary.

Under the new conditions, in the next three years Bulgaria will have guaranteed priority access to new adapted vaccines from the same supplier against any future variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus if the country needs them and expresses a desire to receive them.

This comes in addition to the BGN 112 million saved last year following an agreement under which vaccines initially planned to be supplied to Bulgaria were eventually sold to another EU member state.
