The Bulgarian men's national volleyball team was placed in Group C of the qualifying tournament for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The draw took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Friday. The matches of Group C will be played from September 30 to October 8, 2023 in China.
The other nations that will feature at the event are Poland, Argentina, the Netherlands, Canada, Mexico, Belgium, and the hosting country.
The two teams with the best results will book their place at the Olympics.
The Polish men's national team is currently No.1 in the world rankings of the International Volleyball Federation. The only team that Bulgaria (No.23) is ahead in the rankings is the Chinese (No.26). The Bulgarian team finished 4th at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London but failed to qualify for the next two editions of the tournament. In 1980, Bulgaria won the silver medals – its best achievement so far.
The women's national team (No.16 in world rankings) will play in a qualifying tournament against the teams of Japan (No.6), Brazil (No.3), Turkiye (No.7), Belgium (No.11), Puerto Rico (No.17), Argentina (No.22), and Peru (No.26). The matches will be played from September 16 to 24, 2023 in Japan.
The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation President Lyubomir Ganev expressed the hope that the preparation for the Olympic qualifications will help both teams to build confidence, as they will first have to compete at the Nations League (May 30 to July 16 for the women, 6 June to 23 July for the men) and the European Championships (August 15 to September 3 for the women, August 28 to September 16 for the men).
