More than 400 people have already been charged as part of a country-wide anti-drug operation, said the Prosecutor General's spokesperson Siika Mileva.

The large-scale operation began on Wednesday by order of the Prosecutor General. The operation has no deadline, it is ongoing, Mileva pointed out.

More than 10 drug laboratory operations in different cities of the country have been busted.

About 300 addresses have been checked and 254 inquiries have already been initiated. During the operation, 10,000 doses of drugs were confiscated, 100 of them in just one car. More than 2,700 stalks of marijuana were found. A 17-year-old was arrested, selling pills for BGN 50 a piece. There are other minors among those detained.

Interior Ministry Secretary General Petar Todorov summarized that 1,500 areas around schools and more than 1,600 establishments and drug gangs were checked. "We found stolen items and illegal weapons," said Todorov.

National Police Director Atanas Ilkov said that more and more drivers are getting behind the wheel after using alcohol and drugs which can cause serious accidents. The Interior Ministry and the prosecution service will remain intransigent towards these crimes, he stressed.

The Ministry of the Interior has evidence that some of the detainees are members of criminal groups.
