Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev and European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall officially launched the first edition of the Heat Fest climate festival, Sofia Municipality said on Friday.

The event, organized at the initiative of Sofia Municipality and the Sofia Development Association (SDA), brings together more than 35 organizations, universities and companies at Banski Square to showcase how Sofia is becoming a more sustainable city and better prepared for climate change.

“Sofia genuinely needs a climate festival like this, a place where the community, ideas and action for a more sustainable city come together,” Terziev said at the official opening. Climate change is no longer an abstract issue, but a reality affecting homes, health and the economy, he said. “We can make Sofia a more sustainable city only together and leave it to our children better than it is now,” he added.

Special guest Roswall toured the festival site and was briefed on some of the initiatives presented at the event.

The opening ceremony ended with a symbolic act: Terziev and Roswall jointly planted two birches in the garden outside the Regional History Museum - Sofia, underscoring Sofia’s commitment to restoring the urban ecosystem through nature-based solutions.

Heat Fest runs until June 6 with dozens of discussions, workshops, exhibitions, city tours, cultural events and meetings with Bulgarian and international experts, focusing on Sofia’s sustainable future and quality of life in the city.
