Talks with the tourism sector show readiness to maintain the prices of already agreed tourist packages for the summer season, provided there is no sharp increase in fuel and electricity prices, caretaker Tourism Minister Irena Georgieva told journalists on Thursday after a meeting with President Iliana Iotova.
According to Georgieva, the discussion was frank and constructive, with a main focus on preparations for the summer season and the risks facing the tourism sector amid a complicated geopolitical environment.
The Minister said one of the main challenges is related to concerns about travelling in the Middle East region, which is prompting some European tourists to opt for destinations such as Portugal and Spain. She noted that Bulgaria has the opportunity to use the situation to its advantage if it succeeds in positioning itself as a safe and competitive tourist destination.
As key measures, Georgieva highlighted strengthening the country’s promotion in key markets, as well as focusing on markets where there are no significant concerns about travel.
On the issue of the reduced VAT rate for the sector, Georgieva said the matter is being discussed with industry representatives and has also been raised with the President. She added that such a measure can only be introduced by a functioning parliament following the necessary legislative amendments.
"This is a measure to support businesses, preserve jobs and stimulate investment," the Tourism Minister said, noting that broad public consensus on the issue is also needed.
