Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Friday that early parliamentary elections in Serbia could be held no earlier than May 31 this year and no later than March next year, according to local media.

“The earliest parliamentary elections could be called for the end of May, May 31, and no later than March next year. If they are scheduled for March next year, then they would not be early elections, but regular ones. I promised the people that I would call them earlier, and I will make sure they are held before the end of the year,” Vucic said after consultations with representatives of political parties on topics related to a possible early vote and the country’s foreign policy direction.

He said he is once again giving parties the opportunity to come and express their views, and “perhaps also to hear something about the current global situation and everything we are facing.”

For the past 17 months, protests have been taking place in Serbia, led by students who are raising anti-corruption demands and insisting on early parliamentary elections.

The protests began after, on November 1, 2024, in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, the concrete canopy of a recently renovated railway station collapsed, killing 16 people and seriously injuring one person.
