A position regarding the accumulated problems related to the development and activities of the Performing Arts sector was presented on Friday at the Sofia press club of BTA by the directors of the Ivan Vazov National Theater, the Aleko Konstantinov Satirical Theater, the Theatre Bulgarian Army and the Nikolay Binev Youth Theater. The position is also supported by the Nikolay O. Masalitinov Drama Theater - Plovdiv, the State Music and Ballet Center - Sofia, the Theater and Music Production Center - Varna and the Sofia Opera and Ballet, whose representatives were not present. The event was also attended by the caretaker Minister of Culture, Nayden Todorov.

According to the position, the lack of a national vision and clearly defined and sustainable development mechanisms doom the performing arts to crisis. The authors disagree with the continued application of a non-working and outdated regulatory framework, which lacks clearly defined rules for sustainable financing, transparent criteria for evaluating the activity and guarantees for the long-term stability of cultural institutes. They further disagree with the fact that the budget for performing arts is not developed in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework, which, according to them, puts organizations in a state of inability to cover their costs and fully carry out their activities.

The authors demand a comprehensive change in the Protection and Promotion of Culture Act, taking into account the specifics of the activities of state cultural institutes in the field of performing arts. There is also a demand for the development of an entirely new, transparent and fair methodology for financing, responding to contemporary economic realities, inflationary processes and the need for sustainable development of the sector. According to the authors of the position, clearly defined criteria and rules for the activities of both state cultural institutes and municipal cultural institutes, as well as private theater formations and schools, guaranteeing equality, professional standards and quality are needed.

In February, the Second Forum for the Sustainable Development of the Performing Arts in Bulgaria was held in the concert hall of the National Academy of Music. Challenges facing the sector were highlighted, such as unsuitable working conditions, fair remuneration, and the infrastructure necessary for high-quality artistic production.
