At this stage, there is no information about any threat to Bulgaria, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev told journalists in connection with the military escalation between Israel and Iran on Saturday.

“We have taken all necessary security measures. At 1:00 p.m., the Prime Minister is convening the Security Council, where the possibilities for adopting additional measures will be discussed,” Dechev added.

Earlier on Saturday, international news agencies reported on a military escalation between Israel and Iran. Israel said it had carried out a preventive strike against Iran. US President Donald Trump confirmed that the US armed forces had launched a military operation against Iran, which he described as a large-scale combat operation.

Dechev also commented on the ongoing replacements of directors of regional directorates of the Interior Ministry, saying that they will be more than five.

"We have tried to find people we trust, who have integrity and sufficient experience in the Ministry of Interior system as operational workers and investigating police officers," said the caretaker Minister.

Dechev emphasized that the caretaker Government's main task is to hold fair, transparent, and lawful elections and to prevent a second annulment of the elections, following what happened in the previous parliamentary elections, when, by a decision of March 15, 2025, the Constitutional Court (CC) partially annulled the elections due to numerous electoral violations committed in 2000 out of a total of 12,000 polling stations in the country. Dechev said he did not want a repeat of such elections and a second such decision by the CC, as a result of which 16 MPs who had voted to elect the National Assembly Chair and Deputy Chairs, had to leave and were replaced by 16 new MPs. A whole new parliamentary group entered Parliament, the Minister recalled. Dechev stressed that he did not want the work of the Interior Ministry, while he was in charge, to be associated with a second such event, a second such election, and a second such decision by the Constitutional Court.
