In a statement released on Saturday night by the MRF - New Beginning press service, MRF - New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski said that Saturday's events in the Middle East are a serious test for international security but also for Bulgaria's national integrity on the international stage. According to Peevski, institutions, parties, and the public must act together, with composure and responsibility toward the people.
The statement reads: "The military operation against Iran changes the strategic environment and requires responsible, measured responses. [...] Institutions must act, not talk. The government, even if it is only a caretaker one, must project confidence, not fear and helplessness. In order to deal with the crisis, the caretaker cabinet must interact with the National Assembly as the supreme institution in a parliamentary republic, instead of engaging in petty politics and trying to serve private party interests."
The MRF - New Beginning concluded that while at this point, there is no direct threat to Bulgaria's security, such international crises require increased vigilance and coordination. At such times, political differences must give way to the national interest, while institutions and political parties cooperate to benefit the public.
On Saturday morning, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and the US are jointly striking Iran. In response, Iran launched a missile attack against the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, as well as against Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and the UAE.
