Dr Angel Mavrovski has been appointed Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA). Presenting him to the Agency’s staff, caretaker Minister of Agriculture and Food Ivan Hristanov said he expects the new management to ensure transparency, efficiency and uncompromising control in the BFSA’s work. He stressed that the agency plays a key role in guaranteeing food safety and protecting the interests of Bulgarian consumers and producers, the BFSA said here on Monday.
Dr Mavrovski has managerial experience within the BFSA system. In 2022, he served as Deputy Executive Director in charge of animal health and border control, where he was responsible for organizing and coordinating inspection activities at this country’s external borders.
The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency is among the key institutions in the agriculture sector, including with regard to strengthening oversight and counteracting corrupt practices within the system.
The newly appointed Executive Director expressed readiness to work in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, industry organizations and supervisory authorities in order to enhance public trust in the institution and improve the effectiveness of control activities.
During the meeting, the Minister also introduced Dr Krasimir Kolev, who takes up the post of Deputy Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, replacing Dr Valentin Atanasov. The appointment is part of a renewal of the management team aimed at improving efficiency and coordination in the Agency’s work, the statement said.
Dr Angel Mavrovski graduated in Veterinary Medicine from Trakia University in Stara Zagora. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Genetics at Trakia University.
His professional career to date has been in his field of expertise, working as a private veterinary practitioner and as a commercial representative of veterinary medicinal products.
Dr Krasimir Kolev is an experienced veterinarian with more than 25 years of practice in Bulgaria and international experience in animal health, reproduction and farm management. He holds a Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from Trakia University in Stara Zagora and has completed additional specializations and participated in international programmes in superovulation, embryo transfer and artificial insemination of large ruminants (United States, Spain, Hungary).
On November 24, 2025, Dr Kalina Milusheva was appointed Executive Director of the BFSA following the sudden death on November 2 of the then Executive Director, Dr Svetlozar Patarinski.
