The Chamber of Bulgarian Road Hauliers (CBRH) warned of ongoing serious congestions of trucks at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Turkish border, which have been causing significant stress for drivers and businesses for more than a week, CBRH said here on Wednesday.
The queues of trucks reach tens of kilometers in length and last for hours, putting drivers at increased risk and creating conditions for serious road traffic accidents, the statement says. The Chamber reported that a serious accident occurred on Tuesday in which a Turkish truck driver crashed into the last truck in a column that had formed kilometers before the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, and the driver died on the spot.
The CBRH is calling for urgent measures, including improved traffic management, faster processing of documents, creation of safe waiting areas for trucks, and better coordination between the Bulgarian and Turkish border authorities, the press office of the organization added.
The problem with heavy traffic at the checkpoint has been ongoing for more than a week with queues forming on the approach road to the “Kapitan Andreevo” border checkpoint along the Maritsa Motorway.
