Brigitte Bardot will forever remain the woman who turned Belitsa into a place of hope, compassion and a new beginning, Belitsa Mayor Radoslav Revanski wrote in a condolence letter on Monday. Bardot died at the age of 91, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation announced on Sunday, quoted by AFP.
"With deep sorrow and human sadness we accepted the news that the great French actress and fearless animal rights defender Brigitte Bardot left us at the age of 91," the mayor stated. In his words, thanks to her cause, to her courage to stand on the side of the voiceless and the suffering, the Dancing Bears Park [presently the Bear Sanctuary] near Belitsa has become a home of salvation. "Every bear that lives with dignity under the Belitsa sky today carries a piece of her big heart", Revanski added.
In 1986, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation was founded to help animals in distress. The foundation was involved in establishing the Dancing Bears Park in Belitsa, together with the Four Paws Animal Welfare Organisation. In September, the Bear Sanctuary near Belitsa celebrated 25 years since its establishment in Bulgaria.
"Brigitte Bardot showed us that true glory is not in the spotlight, but in the good you leave behind. She taught us that humanity has no borders, language or nationality, as it is a choice. Rest in peace, Brigitte Bardot. Belitsa will remember you," Revanski wrote.
