site.btaUPDATED Vazrazhdane Will Seek Postponement of Bulgaria's Eurozone Entry until January 1, 2027
Vazrazhdane will move a draft National Assembly resolution obliging the Council of Ministers to request a one-year postponement of Bulgaria's entry into the Eurozone, the Eurosceptic party leader Kostadin Kostadinov said in Parliament's lobby Friday morning.
The lawmaker specified that he does not expect a substantial backing for the move when it is put to a plenary vote.
Kostadinov explained that in accordance with Article 5 of the July 2005 Act concerning the conditions of EU accession of Bulgaria and Romania, the two countries were granted a derogation in fulfilling their obligation to adopt the euro. This derogation was abrogated by a EU Council Decision of July 8, 2025. The Vazrazhdane leader argued that Bulgaria has the right to seek an extension of this derogation by reason of force majeure in the sense of a prospect of joining the eurozone without a regular cabinet and an adopted budget.
He pointed out that the effect of the 2025 budget may be extended to cover 2026, but "there is a little detail as it does not mention anywhere the word 'euro'." "So there's no way it can be done because the budget, where everything should be calculated to the last stotinka, cannot be recalculated into a foreign currency like the euro, given that this 'shitcoin' is not imposed on our country," the MP said.
Kostadinov added that last week he approached President Rumen Radev with a letter, urging the convocation of an emergency meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security in connection with the national security risks entailed by "Bulgaria's unlawful forced accession to the eurozone," but there is no reply. "It is an absolute must that such Consultative Council should take place within next week," the MP insisted.
This is the party's latest bid to frustrate Bulgaria's adoption of the single European currency.
In July 2025, Kostadinov said in a National Radio interview that the Bulgarian people resisted its forced eurozone accession. If Vazrazhdane comes to power, it will take Bulgaria out of the eurozone unilaterally and will do everything necessary to restore Bulgarian financial sovereignty, he pledged. The MP recalled that his party had warned all partners of Bulgaria that Vazrazhdane "will do everything necessary to wreck the eurozone and destroy financial stability in it".
In July 2023 and May 2025, Parliament voted down its proposal to hold a national referendum on deferring the eurozone accession until 2043. A third attempt in July 2025 failed as well, as it was not even put to the vote.
In September 2025, Vazrazhdane MEP Stanislav Stoyanov and the Europe of the Sovereign Nations Group in the European Parliament challenged Bulgaria's euro area entry in the EU Court of Justice.
