The police are controlling a situation involving about 50-60 individuals who are acting aggressively near Vrabcha Street in the capital, said Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov, Director of the Sofia Directorate of Interior. He told a news briefing that this was not part of the anti-government protest held earlier in the evening.

The police have identified most of the group, and their profile is that of hooligans, Nikolov noted. There have been arrests.

Vrabcha Street is where the headquarters of the MRF - New Beginning party are located. Wednesday's anti-government protest in central Sofia was held under the slogan “Resignation! Peevski and Borissov Out of Power”. "Peevski" is the leader of the MRF - New Beginning, Delyan Peevski, and "Borissov" is GERB leader Boyko Borissov.

A BTA reporter saw groups of people gathering on Eagles' Bridge and heading towards the headquarters of MRF - New Beginning at around 10:30 p.m. Part of the group overturned garbage containers and later set them on fire before pushing them toward the police cordon. Most of these people were dressed entirely in black and wore masks. As they walked, they chanted and threw firecrackers. They shouted at passersby who were filming them, "Put your phones away or we'll break them!"

Chief Commissioner Nikolov thanked those who protested peacefully. According to him, about 40 people were detained during the protest. One of the detainees had BGN 10,000 on them and another, EUR 1,500.
