Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov Tuesday expressed hope that Bulgaria will have a normal budget procedure for the first time in the last four years, so that the country does not have to enter 2026 with an old budget. He participated in the groundbreaking ceremony of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Medical University of Pleven.
He stressed that the old budget is not adequate to the eurozone, the current inflation levels and the expectations of young people for more funds for education and social activities. The Deputy Prime Minister couldn't, however, =categorically rule out that the procedure will be delayed, but pointed out that both the MPs of the ruling majority and the government are doing everything possible, adding that the new budget is already in the parliamentary committees. Zafirov also added that the new budget includes an 11% increase in funds for education.
He stressed that recent protests in Bulgaria aim to throw the country into another political crisis and another cycle of snap parliamentary elections. "If the country did not have a regular government, if it did not have this resilience and stability that we have created in the last year, today's project would remain only on paper," Zafirov pointed out, adding that this has been his message to young people. "I respect the right of every person to protest, especially when they are young, when they have dreams, hopes, demands that they must make. But let this protest not be used for impure political purposes by political forces that have proven that they cannot be an alternative to the current government," he emphasized.
