Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov stated on Tuesday that energy takes a central role in Bulgaria’s strategic dialogue with the United States. “We are strongly committed to further deepening cooperation with the US in civil nuclear energy, to creating a more sustainable energy market, to strengthening Bulgaria’s role as a regional energy hub, and to generating even more opportunities for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” Zhelyazkov said at the opening of the third session of the Strategic Dialogue between Bulgaria and the United States, held at the Council of Ministers.

The session was attended by Christopher Smith, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern Europe.

The Prime Minister went on to note: “We have set ambitious goals in the field of energy cooperation, with a special focus on civil nuclear energy. Bulgaria has achieved significant progress in diversifying its energy sector, reducing its dependence on Russian energy resources.”

He emphasized that Bulgaria and the United States are “close friends, trusted partners and allies” who share a common commitment to regional and global peace and security, sustainable economic growth, and the development of bilateral relations. He said that Bulgaria places particular focus on expanding bilateral cooperation across all areas and building upon the strategic partnership.

Zhelyazkov described cooperation in security and defence as the foundation of the strategic partnership, praising US support for the modernization of the Bulgarian Armed Forces. He recalled the acquisition of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets, the purchase of Stryker combat vehicles, and participation in NATO’s Multinational Battle Group in Bulgaria.

In his address, the Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of innovation and new technologies for economic growth, noting that the third session of the Strategic Dialogue will discuss opportunities for projects in high-performance information infrastructure and technology centres.

Zhelyazkov stated that Bulgaria remains committed to securing its borders and continuing cooperation with the US under the Visa Waiver Program through information exchange and security measures. “I believe we will make progress in all key areas and open a new, even more ambitious chapter in our strategic partnership,” the Prime Minister concluded, wishing participants a productive discussion.
