A solemn ceremony was held outside the building of the National Police General Directorate here on Friday to mark the professional holiday of the Bulgarian Police, which is celebrated on the day of their patron saint, St Michael the Archangel.

"You shoulder the great responsibility to be the first to step where others fear to tread. Thank you for continuing to serve the community with a sense of duty despite the tension, risks and challenges," said Interior Minister Daniel Mitov, addressing the ceremony. He noted that the Ministry of Interior needs development and modernization, as well as confidence in its own strengths.

"The police profession is not just a job but a calling. Today, we honour all those who perform their duty with dignity, honour and dedication, day and night, risking their own lives," Chief Commissioner Zahari Vaskov, Director of the National Police General Directorate, said for his part.

Badges of honour for merit were presented to the Director of the Shumen Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Senior Commissioner Georgi Gendov, and to the Director of the Burgas Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Senior Commissioner Vladimir Marinov. Mitov presented a Badge of Honour for Bravery and Merit, 3rd Class, to the Director of the National Police General Directorate, Chief Commissioner Zahari Vaskov, and a Badge of Honour for Bravery and Merit, 2nd Class, to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Chief Commissioner Miroslav Rashkov.

During the ceremony, Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, Secretary General of the Holy Synod, performed a blessing of the waters. Wreaths and flowers were laid to commemorate Ministry of Interior personnel who died in the line of duty. 

Also attending the event were the Director of the Sofia Directorate of Internal Affairs, Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov, Deputy Interior Minister Lyubomir Yosifov, Deputy Interior Minister Toni Todorov, the Director of the Border Police General Directorate, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Chief Commissioner Miroslav Rashkov, and police officers.
