site.btaUPDATED Earthquake in Turkiye Injures 26, Knocks Down Four Buildings
Twenty-six people were injured, as reported by Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu on his X account on Tuesday morning, and four buildings were destroyed after Monday night's 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Sindirgi, Balikesir Province, in northwestern Turkiye, TRT Haber reported on Tuesday. No casualties have been reported.
Some of the injuries took place, as people were trying to rush out of their homes in a panic. The collapsed buildings were uninhabited, as they were among those damaged in another earthquake in August. Electricity has been restored to the area where it was cut off on Monday night.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya arrived at the scene to monitor the activities of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency and to talk to the residents of the most affected areas. On his Facebook profile, he wrote that 504 calls had been received on the 112 emergency number, including 25 about buildings with problems caused by the disaster. The Minister told TRT that disaster response teams had inspected 75 settlements.
Dozens of aftershocks followed the initial 6.1 magnitude quake. The latest and strongest aftershock occurred on Monday at 10:17 a.m. and had a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake was felt more strongly in the cities of Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir, Tekirdag, as well as in some parts of Bulgaria. Due to the late hour and heavy rain in the region, it caught people mainly in their homes, however, caution had them go outside. Some of them spent the night in mosques and schools, which were opened for this purpose.
Earthquakes in Balikesir have been a frequent occurrence since August 10, 2025, when a tremor, again measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, killed one person and injured 29 others. Turkiye is crossed by several geological faults that have caused many tragedies in the past. The southeastern part of the country was hit by a powerful earthquake in February 2023, which claimed the lives of at least 53,000 people.
