The Bulgarian Education and Science Minister’s Chief of Staff, Tanya Mihaylova, met in Nicosia with Cypriot Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, the Bulgarian ministry reported on Tuesday. Bulgaria’s Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Petar Mladenov, also took part in the discussions. The main focus of the meeting was strengthening cooperation between the two countries in education, youth, and sports.

During the official talks, the sides expressed their readiness for closer partnership within the framework of the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with particular emphasis on initiatives aimed at youth policies, education, and sports development. Challenges facing vocational education were also discussed, with a focus on enhancing its appeal and making it a first-choice option for young people. Special attention was given to skills development – specifically, how educational systems can equip students with competencies aligned with the needs of today’s economy and the dynamic labour market.

Mihaylova said: “Education is key to the long-term development of any society. When young people have access to quality education and international opportunities, they become drivers of change.”

As part of her visit, Mihaylova also met with representatives of Cypriot youth and sports institutions to discuss the role of education in shaping young leaders – individuals who think critically, uphold democratic values, and foster meaningful international connections.

The meetings were part of an international exchange organized by Bulgaria’s Youth Guard Detachments Association, supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission. During the exchange, Bulgarian youth visited key state and public institutions in Cyprus, including the House of Representatives, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Cyprus Olympic Committee, and the Cyprus Football Association. The young participants actively engaged in discussions on leadership, tolerance, international relations, and youth policy development. Such initiatives help cultivate civic and social skills.
