Russia's aggression against Ukraine continues to deeply influence Romanian perceptions, according to a survey conducted by Avangarde, cited by Digi24 on Tuesday. Asked if the Russian Federation could attack Romania in the present geopolitical situation, 47% of respondents said yes, 43% considered such a scenario unrealistic, and 10% were undecided. These results suggest that nearly half of the population harbours this concern.
Regarding Romania's involvement in the war in Ukraine, opinions are divided: 37% believe the country should not get involved at all or only for humanitarian reasons, 33% call for greater involvement, and 26% believe that what Romania is doing is enough.
The survey also addressed the defence budget, revealing that 57% agree Romania should allocate 5% of its GDP to defence and armament as requested by NATO leaders, while 38% oppose this idea, and the rest have no clear opinion.
High trust in NATO (74%) explains why Romanians are willing to support higher defence spending, with the Alliance seen as the main shield against potential aggression.
The survey was conducted by telephone between September 8 and 14 among 1,000 respondents. The margin of error is ±3.4%, at a 95% confidence level.
