Following teachers, prosecutors, and judges, local government employees across Romania have also announced that they are starting protests, indicated local media reports. The reason for their discontent is the second package of budgetary and fiscal measures by the government of Ilie Bolojan, which provides for significant cuts in the sector.
On Wednesday, in an interview with Antena 3 television, Romanian Development Minister Attila Cseke said that about 57% of the number of positions, or nearly 6,000 people, would be cut, including advisors to mayors, deputy mayors, and state secretaries.
At the municipal level, one in three must leave, even though they are the lowest paid of all civil servants, commented union leaders in the sector. They also accused the government of "political purges."
The protest will continue indefinitely. Municipal employees will show up for work but will not serve citizens or interact with other entities outside their respective institutions.
