A fire broke out at AFI Cotroceni, the largest shopping mall in Bucharest, Romania, causing panic among visitors seeking refuge from extreme heat on Saturday. The blaze started on the rooftop terrace, producing thick black smoke that reached the cinema halls and halted screenings.
Everyone inside - around 2,300 people, including 500 staff - was safely evacuated. One person trapped in an elevator was rescued by firefighters. No injuries or fatalities were reported, though some experienced panic attacks.
Authorities confirmed the cause of the fire - burning photovoltaic panels and roof insulation. The fire was contained within an hour, and clean-up is underway.
Located in western Bucharest and covering 90,000 sq. m, AFI Cotroceni is popular with both locals and tourists, including many Bulgarians. Fire and emergency crews remain on site.
