University Students Studying Bulgarian in Ankara Are Our Helpers and Inspiration, Ambassador Cholakov Says

It is an honour and a privilege for the Bulgarian Embassy to work with the students studying Bulgarian in Ankara, Angel Cholakov, Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Turkiye told BTA. “They are part of our team, our helpers and inspiration,” the ambassador added. Cholakov was among the official guests at the solemn celebration of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Language and History-Geography at Ankara University.

The celebration of the anniversary was attended by Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Serdar Cam, former and current lecturers, students and representatives of academia, cultural institutions and diplomats.

The Rector of the Faculty of Language and History-Geography at Ankara University presented anniversary plaques to the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism and the Ambassador of Bulgaria to Turkiye. All guests received anniversary badges.

The Faculty of Language and History-Geography, founded in 1935, is one of the first faculties of the newly established Ankara University. It unites departments such as Turkology, Slavic Studies, Oriental Studies, Philosophy, Archaeology, History, Geography and many others, becoming a centre of scientific knowledge and intercultural exchange.

Huseyin Mevsim, professor of Bulgarian Language and Literature at Ankara University, told BTA that currently 45 students are studying Bulgarian Language and Literature at the Faculty. They are mainly local Turkish students. According to Professor Huseyin Mevsim, at first the students had concerns because of the language barrier, but thanks to perseverance, hard work and dedication they managed to overcome the difficulties. The students participate in summer seminars organized by Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski and Saints Cyril and Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, which is great practice, the professor said. The students participate in extracurricular activities, various cultural and educational events, language meetings. Graduates find employment as translators, tour guides, and work in various government structures, Prof. Mevsim added.
