Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD) would agree to Ilie Bolojan, leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), to head the new government only if there are rotating prime ministers, Digi24 reported, quoting sources in the PSD. The rotation has to happen in two years.
On Monday evening, Romanian President Nicusor Dan met with the leaders of the pro-European parties expected to enter the new cabinet, but no consensus was reached on a prime minister and a package of fiscal measures. According to Digi24, PSD would not agree to higher VAT on food and medicine or a cut in investments. The negotiations continue on Tuesday.
Romania is currently governed by a caretaker government after on May 5, Prime Minister and PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu resigned.
The newly elected president, Nicusor Dan, called for consultations with the parliamentary parties, but the second parliamentary force, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians of his rival in the run-offs, George Simion, did not respond to the invitation. Another far-right party, S.O.S Romania of the controversial MEP Diana Sosoaca, also did not take part in the consultations.
During the election campaign, Dan made a statement that he would like to see the so-called pro-European parties - PSD, PNL, the Save Romania Union, and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania - in the new government.
According to the head of State, the main task at the moment is to contain the budget deficit, which reached 9.3% of GDP at the end of 2024.
