5G connectivity along the trans-European transport corridor Orient/East-Mediterranean will be built with the implementation of two Bulgarian projects,  the Transport and Communications Ministry said on Tuesday. The projects have received funding from the Connecting Europe Facility, for which the Transport and Communications Ministry is the coordinator for Bulgaria.

Over EUR 3.36 million have been approved for the construction of 5G infrastructure along the cross-border corridor Sofia - border with Serbia. It will help connect the border regions and ensure continuity of services across the border. Cetin Bulgaria and the Sofia Technical University will build uninterrupted 5G connectivity in the Sofia - Dimitrovgrad, Serbia direction, which is part of the core network of the Orient-East-Mediterranean corridor in the Sofia-Calotina-Belgrade part.

The second project (5G SEAGUL) is for 5G connectivity along the Bulgaria-Greece cross-border transport corridor. It will be implemented by a consortium involving A1 Bulgaria. The other partners are the Greek companies Wings and Cosmote. The European funding for the Bulgarian participant is EUR 2.21 million. The project is aimed at deploying and upgrading 5G on the transport networks of Greek and Bulgarian highways to support connected and automated mobility services.

There will be high-speed internet along 300 km of highway on the Greek side and 173 km on Bulgarian territory.

The border crossing between Greece and Bulgaria will be widely covered to ensure optimal network connectivity and roaming. The timeframe for the project is 36 months.
