The spread of sheep and goat pox in Greece has led to the culling of 470,274 animals so far, ekathimerini.com reported on Thursday, citing official figures.

The highly contagious disease does not affect humans but the outbreak has severely hit Greece's important livestock farming sector, fuelling discontent and contributing to the ongoing farmers' protests, the daily said.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Food said in a statement that since August 2024, 2,042 confirmed outbreaks of the disease have been recorded at 2,540 farms all over Greece. According to the latest available data, 57 new outbreaks were recorded between December 20, 2025 and January 9, 2026, mainly in northern and central Greece, as well as in parts of the Peloponnese.
