Romanians’ incomes are declining while their expenses are increasing, according to a survey by the National Institute of Statistics published on the institution’s official website.

According to the data, the total average monthly income of the population in the third quarter of 2025 amounted to 9,420 lei (EUR 1,850) per household and 3,789 lei (EUR 744) per person. Compared with the same period of 2024, the total average monthly household income increased by 14.1%, while income per person rose by 14.9%.

Total average monthly expenditure in the third quarter of 2025 stood at 8,079 lei (EUR 1,587) per household and 3,250 lei (EUR 638) per person, accounting for 85.8% of total income. Compared with the same period of 2024, expenditure increased by 15.2% per household and by 16% per person.

In urban areas, average monthly household expenditure amounted to 9,109 lei (EUR 1,789), which is 1.3 times higher than in rural areas. As a result, a person living in a city spends on average 3,862 lei (EUR 758) per month, or 1.5 times more than a person living in a rural area.

Romanians spend the most on food and non-alcoholic beverages, amounting to 1,553 lei (EUR 305). This is followed by monthly spending on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, totalling 735 lei (EUR 144) per household. Spending on clothing and footwear amounts to 371 lei (EUR 72). Household transport expenses stand at 340 lei (EUR 67), while healthcare expenses amount to 337 lei (EUR 66). The lowest level of average monthly household expenditure is recorded for education, at just 13 lei (EUR 2.55) per household.

In urban areas, the share of spending on taxes, contributions, fees and levies is 7.8 percentage points higher than in rural areas, the National Institute of Statistics survey also shows.
