The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) was established at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia on June 27, 1985. A total of 341 delegates attended the founding conference during which the organization's statute was adopted and а 144-member Central Council, a 36-member revision commission, and a 19-member Bureau were elected. Ivan Shpatov, who had previously chaired the BFU's predecessor  - the Bulgarian Football Federation founded in 1962 - was unanimously elected as the chairperson of the Central Council.

The BFU unites football clubs and their associations registered as legal entities in Bulgaria. It includes 44 professional and 490 amateur clubs, with its headquarters located in Sofia. As part of the Bulgarian National Sports Federation, the BFU has been a member of FIFA since 1923 and of UEFA since 1954.
