All possible versions and motives are being investigated in connection with the beating of prosecutor Ivo Iliev, Interior Ministry Secretary General Miroslav Rashkov told reporters at a briefing on Tuesday.

Rashkov said that around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, police received a report of an incident in Sofia’s Malinova Dolina quarter, where former deputy city prosecutor of Sofia and current Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office prosecutor Ivo Iliev was assaulted. Iliev is in serious condition and his life remains in danger, Rashkov added.

The Interior Ministry Secretary General also said that an investigation has been launched into an attempted murder of Iliev.

On Tuesday morning, the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office told BTA that a prosecutor from the office had been attacked with a hammer in front of his home. Later in the day, the Justice Ministry announced that, on the orders of Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev, Iliev’s family is now under police protection provided by the General Directorate Security.
