Bulgaria's Budget Deficit Rises to 3% of GDP in 2024

In 2024, the General Government institutional sector reported a budget deficit of BGN 6.24 billion, or 3% of gross domestic product (GDP), according to final data the National Statistical Institute (NSI) released on Tuesday.

In 2023, the sector reported a budget deficit of BGN 3.709 billion, which was 2% of GDP.

In 2024, the deficit in the Central Government sub-sector amounted to BGN 5.32 billion, or 2.6% of GDP. The Local Government sub-sector recorded a deficit of BGN 849 million, and the Social Security Funds sub-sector had a deficit of BGN 71 million.

Bulgaria's debt for 2024 amounts to BGN 48.851 billion, or 23.8% of GDP, while for 2023 it was BGN 42.389 billion, or 22.9% of GDP, the NSI data show.
