President Rumen Radev said in Smolyan on Sunday that the Asenovgrad–Smolyan road must be widened to enable the city’s economic growth.
Radev was in the city with Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok to mark Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day and the centenary of Hungarian poet and translator Laszlo Nagy.
As regards the condition of the Asenovgrad–Smolyan road, which has been discussed for more than 15 years in the context of widening, the President said the route could look even better. He added that the only second-class road in Smolyan Region is being maintained and that netting has been installed in landslide-prone sections.
“But this road must be widened so that Smolyan can grow and develop economically; without good transport connectivity this goal cannot be achieved,” Radev said.
Radev arrived in Smolyan in his personal car, together with his wife Desislava Radeva.
