An exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Israeli-born, Vienna-based artist Dvora Barzilai has opened at the Sredets Gallery in Sofia. It is titled Abigail and is intended to support the vital role of women in today’s world in achieving a just, sustainable, and lasting peace. The display was unveiled by National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova on September 25 and will be on view until October 2, the National Assembly press service reported.

Austrian Ambassador to Bulgaria Andrea Ikic-Bohm said: “Art helps us listen more closely — to history, to one another, and to the voices that might otherwise remain unheard. The work of Dvora Barzilai invites us into a space where we can listen, where tradition, femininity, memory, and faith interact.”

Ambassador Ikic-Bohm emphasized her deep appreciation for the promotion of cultural exchange between Bulgaria and Austria and expressed gratitude for the support of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Culture. “Placing women at the centre of our cultural activity is not just a curatorial decision; it is a priority of Austrian foreign policy,” she noted. “We believe that supporting and amplifying women’s voices across different cultures is essential for peace, security, and a more just world.”

The paintings and sculptures on display were inspired by Jewish tradition and culture. Dvora Barzilai has held exhibitions in numerous countries around the world and now brings this unique artistic journey to Sofia.
