In 2023, environmental tax revenue in the EU amounted to EUR 341.5 billion compared with EUR 334.6 billion in 2022, marking a 2.1% increase, show Eurostat data released on Tuesday. In Bulgaria, environmental tax revenue in the state budget totalled EUR 3.176 billion in 2023, down by 22.4% from the previous year's EUR 4.095 billion.

Despite the EU-average increase, the share of environmental taxes in the EU’s gross domestic product (GDP) declined from 2.4% in 2010 to 2.0% in 2023. During the same period, environmental tax revenue as a share of the total government revenue from taxes and social contributions fell from 6.3% to 5.1%.
