Neverest Ocean Row, the Facebook page dedicated to the ocean rowing blog of Maxim and Stefan Ivanov, published a post in the early hours of Tuesday reporting that their rowboat had successfully crossed the Indian Ocean between Carnarvon, Australia, and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Bulgarian ocean rower Stefan Ivanov, known for his extraordinary endurance proven over previous achievements, crossed the ocean with a team comprised of Ralph Tuijn from the Netherlands, Evgeniy Sudyr from Ukraine, and Liu Yong from China.
The post reads: "Woohoo - we’re back on land. A successful end to this endless rowing marathon filled with countless natural beauties, interesting conversations with teammates, overcoming technical problems and physical pain. We rowed across the Indian Ocean from Carnarvon, Australia to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, covering over 4,550 nautical miles (8,400 km - the same distance from Sofia to Chicago) in 65 days."
The team comprised of hopes to be added to the Guinness Book of Records as the First team to row the Indian Ocean from mainland Australia to mainland Africa, for the fastest row across the Indian Ocean and for the longest distance rowed on the Indian Ocean.
The boat Rose set off from the west coast of Australia on May 17. It completed the voyage in 65 days despite at one point losing its centreboard, having problems with the electronic navigation, and healthcare problems suffered by members of the crew.
The boat travelled under the The Explorers Club flag, associated with the first summit of Mount Everest in 1953 and the first landing on the Moon in 1969, among others.
