Bulgarian Pupils Win Six Medals at 66th International Mathematical Olympiad

Bulgarian pupils won six medals at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad in Australia, said the Natural Sciences Olympic Teams Association on Saturday. At the competition, held from July 10 to 20 in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, the Bulgarian national team won 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. The Olympiad featured 630 students from 110 countries. With the medals won, Bulgaria ranked 23rd in the world in the unofficial country ranking, said the association.

The silver medals were won by Angel Hristov, a 12th-grader at the Acad. Nikola Obreshkov High School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Burgas, Andrey Stefanov, a 10th-grader at the First Private Mathematical High School in Sofia, and Veselin Markovich, a 12th-grader at the Dr. Petar Beron High School of Mathematics in Varna.

Bronze medals were won by Petko Lazarov, a 12th-grader at Acad. Nikola Obreshkov High School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Burgas,  Georgi Nikolov, an 11th-grader at the Paisii Hilendarski High School of Mathematics in Sofia, and Iliya Vasilev, a 12th-grader at First Private Mathematical High School in Sofia.

The Bulgarian team leaders are Prof. Emil Kolev and Prof. Stanislav Harizanov from the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the oldest natural sciences Olympiad in the world. It was founded in 1959 in Romania, and Bulgaria has participated in every edition since the beginning. With the medals from this year, Bulgaria has so far won a total of 309 medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad: 57 gold, 130 silver, and 122 bronze medals.
