Artist Ivan Mudov’s installation Border Flowers will be unveiled at Sofia’s All U Re space on Tuesday, the organizers said. The project was previously exhibited at the National Museum of History.
The installation is the result of Mudov’s travels along the Bulgarian-Turkish border, where he collected waste and transported it to new locations. The work raises questions such as "When does waste become invisible?", "When does it become unbearable?" and "Why is it tolerated in nature but seen as a problem in institutional contexts?"
All U Re presents the installation as part of a dialogue with the creative journey of Jonathan Anderson, until recently the long-time artistic director of Loewe. “Anderson’s work is closely tied to the concept of sustainable fashion - through experimentation at every level of the process and the use of recycled or upcycled materials. While he reprocesses, reduces or transforms waste, Ivan Mudov does the opposite - he purposely preserves it as is without intervention, protecting its integrity. In doing so, waste paradoxically becomes sustainable,” the organizers added.
Though their approaches may seem diametrically opposed - Anderson aims to eliminate waste, while Mudov seeks to conserve it - the organizers noted that this contrast creates “a synergy.” Both artists begin from the same point: the human relationship with the ecosystem. Their perspectives do not clash. They create a space for reflection where residue is redefined as a cultural and ecological phenomenon, the organizers said.
