French cellist Gautier Capucon will once again perform under the baton of maestro Nayden Todorov. The event will take place on November 13 in Bulgaria Hall, the Sofia Philharmonic announced on Saturday. The program will feature works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Rococo Variations, Op. 33 (arr. Wilhelm Fitzenhagen), Gabriel Fauré – Elegie for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 24, and Alexander Borodin – Symphony No. 2 in B minor.

Capucon, known as the ambassador of the cello in the 21st century, made his first appearance in Bulgaria on March 24, 2022, again at Bulgaria Hall, conducted by Maestro Todorov with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, he has performed in the country every year.

Gautier Capucon was born on September 3, 1981, in France. He is recognized as one of the most prominent cellists of his time. He began playing the cello at the age of four and studied at the Paris Conservatory and the Conservatoire de musique neuchâtelois in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He is a frequent guest soloist with leading orchestras around the world. He has worked with conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Andris Nelsons, and Lorin Maazel. Active in chamber music, he regularly performs with artists such as Martha Argerich, Yuja Wang, Daniil Trifonov, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and his brother, violinist Renaud Capucon. His repertoire spans works from the Baroque to the contemporary, and he actively works with living composers and creates new works for the cello.

In 2014, he founded Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, a programme dedicated to mentoring young cellists. In addition to being a teacher and performer, he is also a cultural ambassador – author and host of the popular television series Une saison à Paris, dedicated to classical music.

He plays an extremely rare Matteo Goffriller cello from 1701. An exclusive artist with Warner Classics, he has a discography that includes both classical masterpieces and new recordings inspired by French tradition, Latin American emotion, and even film music.
