The first group of 20 firefighters from the Bulgarian Module for Ground Fire Fighting left for Thessaloniki, Greece on Monday. Their dispatch is part of the assistance provided to the Greek side through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
Senior Commissioner Lyubomir Barov, Deputy Director of the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection in Blagoevgrad, noted that, if necessary, the Bulgarian firefighters will participate in real firefighting operations in Greece.
Regarding the situation in Bulgaria, he stressed that it is normal for the season. There are currently no active fires of a more serious nature.
"What we have as measures now is a plan developed at the level of the regional directorate and, accordingly, the regional services for patrols every afternoon in connection with declared dangerous phenomena for expected heat," said Commissioner Valentin Vassilev, Director of the Fire Safety and Population Protection in Blagoevgrad.
He stressed that high temperatures are a prerequisite for the rapid spread of fires, adding that these patrols are aimed at both identifying perpetrators and imposing fines, as well as early detection of accidents and timely notification of teams for faster intervention. The teams will be located near places where fires usually occur, so that they can react as quickly as possible, he said.
He pointed out that despite the heat in the region, about 30% fewer accidents were reported for the month of June compared to the same period in 2024.
