The Maritsa-East Mines Complex will supply nearly 50% of the electricity needed for household consumers in Bulgaria, Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov said Friday during a briefing at the Maritsa East 2 Thermal Power Plant.
Stankov noted that this guarantees the long-term operation of the power plants in the region, ensuring the jobs of more than 6,000 people employed there.
"This once again proves that the heart of Bulgaria’s energy system is here, in the Maritsa basin," the Minister said. He added that, as Minister of Energy, he is committed to securing the financial stability and long-term operation of the power stations.
"Following the liberalization of the wholesale electricity market, it is the state-owned energy sector that will provide electricity for household consumers through public tenders. This means our colleagues at the Maritsa-East complex will continue to ensure the country’s energy stability by supplying nearly 50% of the electricity for residential needs," Stankov explained.
