World-renowned clarinetist and conductor Charles Neidich will visit Bulgaria from June 23 to July 1, the Sofia Philharmonic said on Monday. His visit includes two concert appearances on consecutive evenings, performing both as a soloist and chamber musician, as well as a series of masterclasses.
Described as “the greatest clarinetist of our time” (Record Geijutsu, Japan) and “an artist of uncommon merit” (The New Yorker, USA), Neidich is known for his blend of technical brilliance, profound musicality, and innovative interpretations of repertoire ranging from Mozart and Brahms to contemporary composers.
On June 26, Neidich will perform Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Manuel Tevar. On June 27, he will appear with the Philharmonica String Quartet, presenting clarinet quintets by Mozart and Brahms.
Neidich teaches at The Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, the Mannes School of Music, and the CUNY Graduate Center. Together with his wife, clarinetist Ayako Oshima, he co-founded the Artena Foundation, which promotes global collaboration and humanistic values through music and the arts.
His masterclasses will take place in Sofia from June 23 to 25 and in Varna from June 28 to July 1, with a lecture-discussion dedicated to Brahms’ clarinet sonatas on June 24. The events are hosted by the Sofia Philharmonic, with the Varna classes held in cooperation with the Dobri Hristov National School of Arts.
