In a Bulgarian National Television interview on Saturday, Vazrazhdane party leader Kostadin Kostadinov said that he has sent letters to all presidents and prime ministers of European Union member states, urging them to prevent Bulgaria from joining the eurozone. “I have sent letters to all the presidents and prime ministers of EU member states, in which I describe the real situation in our country – the actual inflation levels, the budget situation, the attitudes of Bulgarian citizens, and our desire for a referendum. We are asking them not to allow Bulgaria to be unlawfully dragged into the eurozone,” Kostadinov stressed.
According to him, Bulgaria does not meet the necessary conditions for eurozone accession. He claimed the official inflation data is inaccurate and argued that the majority of citizens are opposed to the transition.
Despite these objections, on June 4, Bulgaria received a positive assessment from both the European Commission (EC) and the European Central Bank (ECB) regarding its readiness to adopt the euro as of January 1, 2026. The reports by the EC and ECB are conducted independently, but the European Commission’s opinion is decisive, as it alone has the authority to recommend to the EU Council that Bulgaria be allowed to join the euro area.
In its report, the European Commission recommends Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro starting January 1, 2026, noting that the country’s economy is sufficiently prepared and that its legislation is compatible with the requirements for eurozone membership.
