Quality healthcare depends on the people who provide it, and for them to stay and work in Bulgaria and to be motivated to choose this profession, good working conditions are essential, said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, as quoted by the Government press office on Thursday. Zhelyazkov visited the construction site of the St Anastasia Children’s Hospital in Burgas to inspect progress on the project. He expressed hope that the hospital will soon open its doors and serve society and half a million children.

Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov thanked the Government for its financial support. He emphasized that the new hospital will serve nearly 1.5 million people in the region, with a capacity of 147 beds and 16 departments. It will also employ 120 doctors and 220 nurses. The project is being developed by an international consortium, sponsored and funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which has already built 70 hospitals worldwide. Even before its completion, the hospital has been officially accepted into the European Children's Hospitals Organisation, Nikolov noted.

Regional Development and Public Works Minister Ivan Ivanov said that all streets surrounding the hospital will be renovated. Additionally, the Municipality of Burgas has been prioritized as a direct beneficiary under the Regions in Growth Programme and will receive BGN 24 million in funding this year. “This will be the first national centre for pediatric healthcare in Bulgaria,” Ivanov added.
