Undeclared currency worth BGN 299,241 was  discovered by customs officials at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, the press center of the customs in Svilengrad reported. The prosecution service in Svilengrad charged M.M. (45 years old), a Turkish citizen, in a fast-track proceeding for failure to fulfill his obligation to declare in writing the transfer of the funds, the prosecution press centre said.

On February 23, a truck with Turkish registration, driven by M.M., arrived at the exit point. The truck was traveling from the Netherlands to Iraq via Bulgaria and Turkiye. During a thorough customs inspection of the vehicle , customs officers discovered the undeclared cash in the refrigeration unit of the semi-trailer. The fast-track investigation is still ongoing, added the prosecution service.

Customs statistics show that last year at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, foreign currency worth nearly BGN 27 million was confiscated. Euros, dollars and British pounds were most common.
