Fierce storms caused chaos in the south and the southwest of Romania. The downpour in Craiova flooded 53 streets. On Monday morning, people in the 230,000-population city woke to the sight of their cars submerged up to the windows in floodwater, Digi24 television reported.

The Dolj County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said the wind ripped house roofs in Craiova. A car carrying three persons was swept away by the flood. Tram service in the city was suspended.

The bad weather also caused chaos in Hunedoara County. There, firefighters in the town of Petroșani were called to help drain flooded streets.

Air traffic disruptions were reported as well. An Airbus A320, operated by Wizz Air on a flight from Bergamo, Italy, was redirected to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport after two unsuccessful attempts to land at Craiova.
