Varna's St. Marina University Hospital Thursday reported an organ procurement situation involving a foreign patient who was pronounced brain-dead.
The donor was a 50-year-old foreign citizen, a permanent resident of Germany, who during her summer vacation in Bulgaria suffered a severe brain hemorrhage and despite doctors' efforts succumbed to brain death.
"The family immediately agreed to give a chance for a new life to seriously ill Bulgarians," said Dr. Viliyan Platikanov, head of the Clinic of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care. After lengthy documentary procedures at international level, the two kidneys and a liver were explanted on Wednesday at St. Marina Hospital.
The hospital management and medical teams express their condolences to the relatives of the deceased patient, as well as their respect for their humane decision to donate their loved one's organs.
